Nightlife of Underwater Organisms Observed
Plankton

During latest submersion of “Mir” deep diving vehicles, scientists observed migration of plankton and fish of lake Baikal.

The submersion was aimed at revealing patterns of migration and feeding of certain species of plankton and fish. These organisms tend to move closer to lake surface during predawn hours, when they feed.

Scientists sampled water from the surface and down to 1200 meters and found that in water mass plankton and fish were distributed according their size. Upper layers hosted organisms, sized less than 2 cm; when depths reached 50-80 meters, lake dwellers became larger – 3-4 cm, and in waters, deeper than 350 meters, researchers detected underwater dwellers as large as 6-8 cm.
