Palace of Bulgar Khans Discovered in Tatarstan

With the help of a land remote sensing satellite Russian researchers have found an ancient palace on the territory of Tatarstan, RF.

The fortress most likely belonged to Bulgar khans that ruled over Volga Bulgaria founded around the year 660 by Khan Kotrag, one of the sons of Khan Kurbat, the brother of the founder of the first Bulgar state Khan Asparukh.

Volga Bulgaria existed as an independent state till the 13th century, when it was occupied by the Tatar-Mongol Khan Batu, and in the 16th century the state of the Bulgars was finally erased by the Russian tsar Ivan IV the Terrible.

In the course of archeological diggings in this area historians have already unearthed a khan’s sepulcher, handicraft workshops, temples, tombs of rich habitats of Volga Bulgaria, giving an eloquent evidence of the fact that the civilization of ancient proto-Bulgarians was of an exceptionally high level.
