The ceremony of farewell to the People’s Artist of the USSR Oleg Yankovsky will take place in the Lenkom Theatre on Friday and be followed with his funeral at Novodevichy Cemetery.
According to the Lenkom’s art director Mark Zakharov, the death of Oleg Yankovsky became “a deathblow for the theatre”, where the actor had played for more than 35 years.
The funeral procession will go from the Lenkom Theatre to the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Khamovniki for the requiem service and then to the Novodevichy Cemetery. Oleg Yankovsky will be buried next to the grave of ballerina Natalia Bessmertnova, on the so-called newest area, where many famous performers and directors are laid to rest.
Mourning events will also be held in Saratov, where the actor had lived and worked for a long time, till 1973.
Oleg Yankovsky became the last People’s Artist of the USSR – he got this title on the 21st of December 1991, just a few days before the collapse of the Soviet Union.
