A road paved with sarcophagi found in Novgorod
Archaeological excavations in Novgorod

According to the source, a road paved with fragments of medieval sarcophagi and stone crosses is found on Tuesday in Detinets, the citadel of the ancient Novgorod. The found was made accidentally by the power engineers under the asphalt during removing the overburden not far from Zlatoustovskaya tower.

The road is supposed to be made in the Soviet time. The specialists consider the sarcophagi as box-type ones, and age-dated them preliminary 12th – 13th centuries. Surely, there are some artifacts of pre-Mongol period. The crosses are to be dated a little later. The historians are not ready to answer, what necropolis they are coming from. The earthworks are going on under the control of specialists. The artifacts are to be committed to the funds of the Novgorod museum for keeping.
