Europeans pay for Russian gas in rubles

Gazprom has unsurprisingly become the first Russian company to execute the order of the Russian authorities claiming that the Russian ruble should be used in oil and gas transactions.

CP Energia, the only private Polish company buying Russian gas, has signed a new contract of sale with Gazprom Export. Under the new agreement, Russian liquefied natural gas delivered to CP Energia is to be paid for in rubles starting April 1, 2009.

the new payment system seems to be more profitable for the Polish side, since the Russian ruble-Polish zloty exchange fluctuations are more stable than the Zloty rate against the Euro.
