Complex Substance from One Element Created
Atom of boron

International think-tank, including researchers from Russia, Italy, China and USA, synthesized a substance, which behaves like it contains several elements, but in fact, consists of only one.

New substance is boride of boron. Its chemical formula is B28, and it lives under very high pressure and temperature – over 190 thousand atmospheres and 1400 degrees Centigrade.

All atoms in known large molecules, made from one element – fullerenes, for instance – are equal, but this is not the case. B28 has two different from each other structural units: icosahedral cluster B12 and cluster B2, which form a crystal lattice, similar to that of sodium chloride. One lattice cell contains 28 atoms of boron, that is why the compound has B28 formula.

New state of boron is called “partially ionized”, since two clusters have different electronic properties, and charge is transferred between them like between two different elements.
