Junior Sergeant Alexander Glukhov of the Russian contingent in South Ossetia has suddenly turned up in Tbilisi. The Georgians say he deserted after arguing with superiors and is now seeking political asylum. The Russian military disagrees, saying the Sergeant was abducted by Georgian commandos and must be immediately sent back.
Glukhov told a Russian radio station on Wednesday that he had not intended to make a political statement or to betray his country. On Tuesday, he said he had left for Georgia because he was fed up with his military service and because his commander had been verbally abusive. "I plan to live here for a while. I just spoke to my mum to calm her down," 21-year-old Alexander Glukhov told Reuters.
