Canadian Architects to Make Mariinsky Stage Transparent

Art Director of Mariinsky Theatre Valery Gergiev has finally found an architectural solution for Mariinka Two instead of the cupola suggested by Dominique Perrot.

The new project will be developed by Canadian architects Jack Diamond and Donald Schmitt from the Canadian office Diamond & Schmitt Architects.

The architects Diamond and Schmitt attracted attention of Valery Gergiev with their project of the Opera House built in Toronto two years ago; Maestro highly estimated its acoustic qualities, they say in his surroundings.

It is known that Valery Gergiev had the same plans for building of Mariinsky’s second stage. The opera house cost from 85 to 150 million dollars, according to different sources. The cost of Mariinka-2 is tentatively estimated at 400 million dollars. According to its concept, it will be a democratic “city room” with transparent right-angled facades, so that the passers-by could see everything going on inside there.
