Suicide Column Designed by Andrei Makarevich May be Brought Down

The future of “Andrei Makarevich’ Stele” is now under consideration in Veliki Novgorod.

By the end of this week the authorities will probably have decided to bring down the dangerous stele at the Dostoevsky Regional Drama Theatre.

The theatre administration is waiting for the final conclusion of a technical commission that has examined the state of the emblem stanchion, which is part of the theatre’s general design. The stele is popularly known as “column of Makarevich”.

The point is that the future frontman of the popular rock band Masina Vremeni, then a young architect, Andrei Makarevich was a member of the project team that designed the theatre’s building in Veliki Novgorod.

In the recent two decades the stele at the drama theatre has become one of the places where some desperate dwellers go to their account. Several people have already done themselves in by jumping down from the high column onto the stone flags at its base.
