Icons of Romanovs Epoch Exhibited in Tretyakovka

November 27 saw the opening of the exhibition Icon Painting of Romanovs Epoch presenting rare icons of the 17th-20th centuries in the Tretyakov Gallery.
Among the exhibits there are works by artists from the famous Palekh and Mstera.
Icon Painting of the Romanovs Epoch gives an overview of development of icon painting in Russia. The manner of icon painting was influenced by both artistic adoptions from Europe and Byzantium and current political events: under the reign of this or that emperor, representations of a saint corresponding to the ruler became popular.
The highlights of the exhibition include Our Lady of August depicting a soldiers' prayer at the German frontline in 1915, and St. John the Forerunner in Desert with a landscape in the manner of Dutch artists.
The icons displayed at the exhibition were earlier kept in family collections.
The exhibition runs till 13 January 2009.
