General Skobelev Monument to Appear in Moscow

In 2009 a monument to General Mikhail Dmitrievich Skobelev will be set up between Lubyansky Proezd and Staraya Square in Moscow.
      The monument will be located not far from the monumental chapel To Grenadiers that Perished under Pleven, which has stood in Ilyinsky public garden since 1887.
      Mikhail Dmitrievich Skobelev (1843-1882) was one of the most popular generals of the Russian army of the second half of the 19th century. He participated in the Conquest of Khiva of 1873, was a military governor of the Ferghana Oblast,stormed Pleven twice, seized Lovetch, crossed the Balkan Mountains in winter, played a major role in the battle near Sheynovo in 1877, occupied San Stefano under Stambul in 1878, and headed Akhal-Tekke expedition of 1880-1881. Moreover he spoke for defending the Slavs of the same faith from German oppression.
