The second Assumption Cathedral in Yaroslavl has finally been discovered. Archeologists from Moscow Academy of Sciences have found the church basement of the 16th century with fragments of the 13th century.
Since the late 1930s historians and architecture specialists have tried to find the lost ancient church in Yaroslavl. Chronicles mention that the cathedral was built on the banks of the Strelka River. However the exact location remained unknown for a long time. The first good fortune the archeologists had was the 17th century base, discovered during construction of a new church.
Recently the second Assumption Cathedral dating back to the 16th century has been found. In the very basement of the newly unearthed church archeologists found bricks of the 13th century. The rounded shape is very typical for Yaroslavl area of the pre-Mongolian epoch. Specialists of the Moscow Academy of Sciences hope that under the 16th basement they will find the bases of the first Assumption Cathedral of 13th century.
