Two days ago the scientific vessel “Akademic Fedorov” headed for the Antarctica with 70 crewmembers and 110 polar explorers aboard.
The journey is the part of 54th Russian Antarctic Expedition. More scientists will join the expedition in Cape Town. This year the expedition is multinational: researchers from USA, Germany, Poland, South Korea and other countries joined Russian scientists in order to find out more about the Antarctica.
Expedition members will study natural processes and phenomena, which occur in near-Earth space environment, as well as upper, free and surface atmosphere. Researchers will pay special attention to marine and continental ice cover, earth crust and biosphere of the South Pole, and continue year-round monitoring various elements of Antarctic natural environment.
Russian and American scientists will practice techniques of searching for extraterrestrial living organisms, which later will be applied during expeditions to Mars and Europe, Jupiter’s satellite.
