GPS to be Banned in Russia?
GPS satellites

Russian authorities cannot rule out the possibility of banning GPS from using on Russian public transport.

Today any navigation systems, including GPS, are allowed for using on vast Russian territories. However, during recent meeting on space industry, government representatives said that they planned to ban GPS navigation system from being used on municipal and public means of transportation.

Russian authorities also mentioned the draft law “On navigation activities in Russian Federation”, which will be submitted to Russian State Duma before the end of 2008.

Peter Ellis :
What's the logic behind this ban? Are GPS widely used on public transport in Russia? How will it be enforced? Could the ban on GPS on public transport be the first stage in a much wider restrictions or the complete of all GPS use by ordinary citizens?
