Famous works by Andrei Rublev are perishing in the Dormition Cathedral of Vladimir.
While officials are trying to find money for they restoration, there are still church services held and excursions performed there, though the unique wall paintings need special temperature and light regimes. Specialists apprehend that in this situation Rublyov’s frescoes might not last till restoration.
“Radiant azure and sunny gold” - the art historian and archeologist count Aleksei Uvarov wrote about these frescoes in the 19th century. 200 years later restorer Aleksandr Skvortsov peers into the dirty plaster and cannot recognize Andrei Rublyov’s fresco The Last Judgment.
Today everyone knows that frescoes by Andrei Rublev in due time made a new page in the history of world painting. Yet few keep it in mind that in 1408, when the master started painting the frescoes in the Dormition Cathedral of Vladimir, the great Italians Piero della Francesca and Domenico Veneziano were not even born yet. It was only 90 years later that Leonardo da Vinci painted his The Last Supper.
