Excavators Ruin Historical Cemetery

Russian archeologists are now undergoing real shock: unique cultural monuments in Neviansk town (Sverdlovsk Region) are demolished by construction gangs.

Excavators dug the oldest cemetery of Neviansk town. Crushed down in earth ditches are dozens of 18th century graves, forged railings, old brickwork, and the base of the town’s first church (that was earlier accidentally burned down) – Our Savior’s Transfiguration Church founded as far back as 1710. Brick crypts and human bones stick out in trenches.

It appears that the builders did not know anything about the historical cemetery located here. Now by request of historians the demolition works have been suspended for a few days.

All that representatives of Monument Protection Society can do now is bring complaints to the Ministry of Education, which is the customer of construction works, and to the Ministry of Culture.
