New Collider May Appear in Russia
International linear collider

LHC’s proton beams are still waiting to collide, but scientific community already talks about building new generation of particle accelerators.

Large linear collider of electrons and positrons will be much more powerful than LHC, and its structure is much simpler. New collider won’t have expensive magnets for deflecting particles, moving at relativistic velocity; it will consist of two long linear accelerators, where electron and positron beams collide.

Russia is among countries, which compete for building new collider on their territory. One of the requirements for winning this “contest” is funding not less than 35% of construction expenses. Official start of the project is scheduled for September 10, 2009.
