Researchers from Novgorod State University developed a unique computer-based technology for restoration of ancient Russian frescoes.
New technology currently saves monumental painting in the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, dating back to 12th century. The church frescoes couldn’t be restored manually due to irretrievable losses of many fragments of paintings.
Scientists scanned survived photos of monumental painting, thus retrieving frescoes’ contours. Later these contours will be projected on the Church’s walls, where frescoes’ fragments are put together by fine art restorers.
New technology excludes accidental mistakes and provides restoration with 0.5 mm accuracy.
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, where restoration takes place, belongs to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
