An archeological expedition working in the vicinity of Ksizovo Settlement of Zadonsky District has come quite near to solving one of the mysteries of hoary antiquity.
Long ago historians came to the conclusion that in the 5-6th centuries one of the big cities, and probably the capital of the Hunnish state had been situated here. Numerous finds of crafts and mass entombments of that epoch were the evidence. Within a few years scientists have uncovered several dozens of graves. Another find in the area of the burial ground has revealed a tragedy that happened here some thousands years ago.
“We have found remains of four people all at once on the site of fire of a wooden building” – Igor Kozmirchuk, Chairman of Local History Fund tells, - “the bodies were most probably brought to the ruins of the burnt house a few months after the death of these people. They were not even buried. So far we have not managed to define who they belonged to: whether they were men or women, warriors or innocent civilians.
Earlier archeologists also found similar remains of bodies heaped up in a random way. Yet, it is the latest find that allows assuming that the Hunnish settlement was attacked and ravaged by a hostile tribe. As a result of the foray the old town was brought down and most of its citizens were killed.
None of the historic documents mentions “battle at Ksizovo”. Scientists are to find out who of the Huns’ enemies might have destroyed one of the big centres of the Hunnish state that once existed on Don.
