Archeologists have found 300 Swedish coins on a frigate that sank in the mid 18th century in the Vyborg Bay of the Leningrad Region.
“When examining the 44-cannon Swedish frigate “Zemira” that sank during the Vyborg sea battle of 22 June 1790 we found about 300 copper coins minted at the Stokholm mint in the 1730s” – said Konstantin Shopotov, Head of submarine archeological expedition “Memory of the Baltic”.
Frigate “Zemira” was discovered by archeologists a few years ago. On bottom of the bay, at the depth of about 25 meters there are six big fragments of the ship that caught fire and then blew up and sank down.
The copper treasure is not the first find made by the archeologists on “Zemira”. Last year they discovered 14 cast-iron cannons and this year - an anchor and two bronze cannons on the ship.
During 19 years of work the expedition “Memory of the Baltic” has found and examined over 20 sunken ships.
