Dwellers of Voronezh suggest turning the animation character, Kitten from the Lizukov Street, an honorary freeman of their city.
If the initiative gets supported by local authorities, Vasili the Cat is going to become the pride of Voronezh on a par with his great fellow townsmen, such as musician Mstislav Rostropovich and writer Gavriil Troyepolsky.
Kitten is the main character of the popular Russian animated cartoon film (The Kitten from the Lizukov street) (1988), created by director Vyacheslav Kotyonochkin. It is a story of how Vasili the Cat was looking for a better life in Africa, but realized that there is no place better than Voronezh.
The whiskered character enjoys admiration of Voronezh dwellers. Five years ago they even set up a monument to Vasili the Cat at the General Lizukov Street. Now they have decided that Kitten deserves higher recognition.
Five thousand Voronezh dwellers have already signed a letter for the favourite Kitten to become the honorary freeman of Voronezh. 15 grass-roots organizations and 10 publishing houses have supported the unusual initiative of youth movement.
