A unique “guide” to the communist epoch of Hungary has been published by one of the country’s publishing offices. The so-called retro-dictionary contains around 700 articles explaining the meaning of some words, abbreviations and terms that were widely used in the post-war years till establishing the new regime in 1989. The dictionary’s author worked on the book for three years but died in 2007 before the dictionary was published.
According to the publisher, they would not want this work to be taken as an ordinary dictionary of notions and terms but wish it would become a desk book for its owner. According to history experts, the book is a romantic linguistic gravure representing an entire epoch. In particular, the dictionary explains the meaning of such archaic words as “expatriation”, “construction camp”, and many others that became signs of those times.
