This first birchbark manuscript in archeological season of 2008 has been found in Veliki Novgorod.
The fragment thirty cm long with five lines of text preserved was retrieved during repair works in Torgovaya storona (Trading part) of the city from the layer that tentatively dates back to the 15th century.
The Interfax Agency cites deciphering of the text according to Sergei Troyanovsky, Head of the Archeological Research Organization and Support Centre: The birch manuscript is a letter from one of estates managers. He reports to his boyars (landlords) that he wants to catch the folks responsible for stealing hay from the hayfield and wonders what he is going to get in reward for this.
This birchbark manuscript has become the 962nd of those discovered in the city of Veliki Novgorod.
