Flight model of Russian neutron telescope is now fully integrated into NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO).
Integration took place in Goddard Space Flight Center in April and involved Russian and American space experts. During installation process LEND was equipped with regular vacuum shield thermal insulation and plugged into LRO’s electric systems. Tests showed normal operation of all telescope’s systems. Soon LEND will pass complex tests.
NASA Orbiter’s launch is scheduled for October 2008.
Main tasks for LEND include measuring Moon’s neutron radiation with spatial resolution of 5 km for global mapping of hydrogen content in surface layer of regolith, searching for water ice deposits in polar craters and measuring neutron radiation component for providing safety for future manned missions.
