Solovki Monastery Rejects Gigantic Christ Monument

Authorities of the Solovki Museum Reserve have not approved of the idea to set up a 100-meter sculpture of Christ offered by Zurab Tsereteli.
According to Solovki Museum Assistant Director Sergei Rubtsov, setting up of the monument would disfigure the nature landscape of the islands and so the project suggested by sculptor Zurab Tsereteli is not given any consideration at all. UNESCO that protects the museum will also hardly support the idea of erecting the gigantic monument in Solovki, Mr. Rubtsov added.
At the same time, according to Arseni Roginsky, Head of the Historical and Educational Association Memorial, the gigantomania typical of Tseretelis creativity is not in accord with the place like Solovki.
