The aviation authorities of Egypt have prolonged the permit on flights of Russian IL-86 aircraft to the country. These most spacious USSR-made planes do not meet the noise norms introduced in the EU and a number of other countries. In recent years IL-86s operate on air routes within Russia and also carry out flights to Egypt, Turkey, the UAE, etc.
The Egypt authorities raised the issue of banning IL-86 flights in 2002, but prolonged the permit every year since that time. IL-86 is capable of carrying up to 350 passengers aboard and provides a considerable part of air transportation to Egyptian resorts Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh. Banning IL-86 flights could lead to rising transportation costs due to switching to some less spacious types of aircraft and as a result the general number of tourists to Russia could decrease.
