Iosif Boyarsky, longstanding Director of Model Animation Association of Soyuzmultfilm Studio has died, aged 91, in Moscow.
Under his direction the most famous Soviet model animation projects, such as, for instance, Cheburashka and 38 Parrots, were created.
Famous animation film director Yuri Norstein said in his interview: “The flourishing of model animation in Soyuzmultfilm was undoubtedly related to the name of Iosif Yakovlevich. Boyarsky was an extremely jolly and optimistic person, and a very well educated one. He was not a Communist Party member, and thus, was not engaged in all those things. It was thanks to him that most bold and fresh ideas could be implemented in the model animation studio”.
Iosif Boyarsky was born in Moscow, on November 7, 1917. After the war he graduated from Economy Faculty of VGIK. From 1960 he worked in Soyuzmultfilm: first as a film director and then as director general of the Model Animation Association. From 1979 to 2000 he was the Dean of Animation Faculty of the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Film-Directors. He is author of several memoir books.
