Why Did Little Mammoth Die?

Why Did Little Mammoth Die?

Several years ago remains of a little mammoth were found in the Sakha Republic, and since that time scientists continue thorough studies of the body.

Only forepart of the mammoth is preserved enough for studies. Tusk examination revealed that the mammoth was about one year old, when it died. X-ray computed tomography showed more or less exact age of the finding – between 1 and 1.5 years. Studies confirmed that mammoths carried fat reserves on their shoulders like camels do now. Such deposits helped mammoths to survive severe winters.

Scientists tried to find any trace of infection in the mammoth, however, not a single dangerous infection has been detected. Therefore, biologists suggest most probable reason for baby mammoth’s death – the creature got bogged down and sank.

Mammoth’s body is still frozen, and scientists cannot wait for research to continue.
