A tugboat with reportedly four Russian and two British citizens has been captured by pirates off the coast of Somalia, according to Russian port authorities. The "Svitzer Korsakov" tug was on its way from St. Petersburg to Sakhalin - an island off Russia's Far East.
A SOS signal about an attack of pirates was sent at 13:17 on Friday. The distress signal was picked up by the crew of “Switzer Busse”, which heading behind “Switzer Korsakov”.
The vessel was heading under the so-called convenient flag of Saint Vincent and Grenadines, the Russian colors had to be raised on the tugboats only in Singapore.
According to the latest information, “Switzer Korsakov” was towed to the port of Mogadishu. All members of the crew are at the board, nobody suffered.
Russia has informed the NATO fleet of the situation.
Svitzer-Korsakov was built in St. Petersburg and delivered to the Danish-based shipping company Svizer-Sakhalin around a month ago.
