Cyrillic domain to appear on the Web

Russia plans to create a national Cyrillic domain in 2008. The names of sites in the new Internet zone will be written only in the Russian Language, which promises to make surfing the Internet more convenient for Russian users. The testing of .ðô (rf) zone (short for Russian Federation) has been completed recently, reports the RBC daily magazine.

Besides, the registrars might well auction the most valuable domain names in the new zone.

Analogous services are operated in several other countries, China for instance, and are extremely popular. In the long view the number of registered sites in the new zone may even surpass that of domain .ru.
