Residents of Privolzhskoe Settlement of Tver Region have won a regional grant to create the Museum of Vipers.
Earlier Privolzhskoe Settlement was called Gadovo (based on the word gad standing for a viper and also referring to a treacherous person) because of snakes, which its environs abided with.
The collection of the museum is already rather extensive, presenting all sorts of pictures not only of real grass snakes, vipers and other reptiles, but also those of fairy and mythological serpents and dragons, such as Zmei Gorynych (a multi-headed firedrake from Russian folklore), the Serpent of Devil, Poloz (a famous worm character of Bazhov's fairy tales), and even of the green serpent (Russian expression for the demon drink), as well as serpentines of some apparatuses used for distilling strong drinks.
