50th Anniversary of First Nuclear Reactor
The RR-8 reactor

First research reactor in the world RR-8 celebrates its 50th anniversary, report fellows of the Kurchatov Institute of Nuclear Physics during the conference, dated for this event. The conference welcomed many participants, academicians of Russian Academy of Sciences and professors of famous Russian science institutions among them.
Past 50 years brought many new features to the research reactor, for example, its power increased from one to eight megawatt. The RR-8 reactor was build as an initiative of world famous creator of a nuclear bomb Igor Kurchatov and for a long time remained the only one swimming-pool reactor in the world. Pool-type reactors use ordinary water as a coolant, moderator and top shielding, and reactor core and reflector are inside a 11 m deep pool.
Late Russian nuclear experience was shared with former Soviet satellites, Hungary, China and Belgium. Soon the RR-8 reactor will become part of a specialized neutron centre, which later enters National Nanotechnology Laboratory.
