Saudi Arabia is going to purchase Russian weapons for the first time ever, reports the Kommersant newspaper. Following the results of the talks held yesterday between Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and the Rosoboronexport Unitary enterprise, the countries plan to sign an agreement regarding development of military-technical cooperation.
It is reported that 150 tanks T 190C priced at $500 million, 100 helicopters Mi 35 and Mi 17 estimated at $2 billion and about 20 Buk M2 air defense medium-range systems will be supplied to Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia is one of the leading importers of weapons and military equipments in the world. Annually about $12-17 billion are spent on these purposes.
Some experts regard this deal as an attempt to strengthen relations between Saudi Arabia and the Russian Federation.
