EU-Russia aviation summit, that was planned to take place in Moscow on November 16-17, is about to break down. The Europeans have made a condition that they will participate in the summit only if Russia abolishes fee set for foreign airlines for flying over Trans-Siberian territory.
Experts deem that the potential summit breakdown may considerably damage relations between the Russian and European aviation authorities.
Earlier the European governments adopted “Agreed Principles on the Modernisation of the existing system of utilisation of the Trans-Siberian routes” that implied that the RF government would undertake a responsive move on gradual abolition of fees for foreign airlines by 2013; however, the Russian government still has not made any decision.
The company that gets “transfer” money paid by European airlines for flying over Trans-Siberian territory (around $US420 million in 2006) is Aeroflot, the largest Russian air carrier.
