Animal Cruelty at Orthodox Monastery in Russia

Sergiev Posad is a small Russian city and the place where one of the greatest and most famous Russian monasteries the Trinity-St. Sergius Laura (monastery) is situated.

Recently officers of the Centre for Animal Protection of Sergiyev Posad city have caught the staff of the Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery maltreating animals. Guest workers and palmers, involved in fatigue duties on the monastery territory, packed homeless kittens in sacks and left them die an awful death at the rubbish dump.

On Saturday, October 27, a worried woman regular churchgoer of the Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery called to the local Centre for Animal Protection saying she saw the workers clean the monastery territory and catch homeless cats. While the adult cats managed to escape, the kittens were easy to catch.

Then the workers packed the animals in sacks. Witnesses tried to interfere but were told it was the priest-provisor to order to clean the territory from homeless animals. On the whole the workers caught around 30 kittens. While the churchgoers were calling the Centre for Animal Protection, the workers put 3 sacks with homeless animals on a garbage-disposal car for further transportation to the local rubbish-dump.

When the officers of the local Centre for Animal Protection arrived to the spot, the rubbish-dump security workers said it was not the first time the monastery staff came there and that they used to throw kittens in the local pond. Near the pond the officers found only one sack 7 kittens were alive, and the rest had already been dead.

Next morning the officers went to the monastery to get some explanation but were not allowed to meet with the priest-provisor. However, the monastery workers told them that the churchgoers were given a week to take all homeless animals from the monastery territory otherwise the workers would do it in a habitual way.

The staff of the Centre for Animal Protection of Sergiev Posad intends to turn for help to the head of the Russian Orthodox Church Alexy II.
