Anatoli Papanov Would Have Turned 85 Today

If Anatoli Papanov (1922-1987) were alive, he would be getting greetings from all over the country now, as the great actor beloved by millions of viewers would have turned 85 today.

Though Anatoli Dmitrievich Papanov has already been gone for 20 years, film lovers do not forget him and keep admiring his brilliant roles in 12 stulyev (Twelve Chairs) (1977) and Beregis avtomobilya (Beware of the Car) (1966), Brilliantovaya ruka (The Diamond Arm) (1968) and Belorusskiy vokzal (Byelorussia Station) (1970), Zhivye i myortvyeM (The Alive and the Dead) (1964) and Kholodnoe leto 53 (Cold Summer of 1953) (1987). Kids cannot help being enraptured with the cult animated cartoon film series Nu, Pogodi! (Just you wait!), in which the funny ill-starred Wolf speaks with the husky voice of Papanov.

As any big actor he certainly had not enough time to do everything he could. He never saw Eldar Ryazanovs picture Chelovek niotkuda (The Man from Nowhere) (1961) starring him: the film had been on the shelf for 27 before it was released after the death of Papanov. The actor did not see his last film Cold Summer of 1953 either, because he suddenly passed away right after the filming was over.
