Russian Museums Fear of Losing their Exhibits

Masterpieces belonging to the biggest Russian museums are nevertheless going to be displayed in London.
Among the exhibits there are works from Shchukin collection, which was nationalized after the revolution of 1917; a grandson of the collections former owner has already tried to assert his rights for the canvasses in court.
Therefore the British government had to give written guarantees ensuring that all the paintings will be returned to Russia after the exhibition.
Following the two-year ago incident, when after the exhibition in Switzerland paintings from the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum had been arrested, Russia refused to display its artistic values in the countries, where the law does not secure safety in such matters. Britain has no law protecting from similar cases, so experts apprehend that even in spite of the letter of guarantee, the exhibition will hardly turn out without scandals and court trials.
