It is planned to build an international airport at the Russia-Ukraine border. Yesterdays ministers of foreign affairs of the two countries discussed this project at a meeting in Belgorod.
The airport will be located between the Ukrainian city Kharkov and Russian Belgorod. A 2-thousand-hectare piece of land has already been purchased, and there are plans to expand the airport’s total area in the future using the near-border territory of the Kharkov Region. The project has been estimated at US$1.2 billion.
Civil aviation specialists from St. Petersburg have already started design and engineering works; it is also known that the airport will be situated 35 kilometres distant from Kharkov and 37 kilometres distant from Belgorod.

: Why does Russia try to build an airport in Ukraine? Did they not build Chornobyl already? Who is going to operate and hold control over that airport which is going to be built on territory of Ukraine. Who is going to finance majority of this project? will 2-hectare piece of land be enough for taking of and landing? Added: 23 October 2007 08:26 |

: Well, actually it is not Russia trying to build an airport in Ukraine - this decision was taken by both countries, perhaps, because they both find this project to be mutually profitable. At least ministers of both countries have officially approved it.
The project of building an airport is going to be financed by large Russian and western private investors. The building of the airport will not belong to just one state.
You are right, 2 hectares of land are not enough for planes to take off and land. It was a typo that i already have corrected. Thank you for pointing at the typo.
As for Chernobyl, it was built by the USSR.
Added: 23 October 2007 13:04 |

: It is good that two counties can work for a common goal. Maybe they can teach this to United states. Team work every one wins. Added: 24 October 2007 00:00 |

: I question the neccesity of this airport. What type of economic and environmental impact studies have been done? Both Kharkiv and Belgorad have international airports of thier own, and it seems like this project is not really required. In addition, who will build/own the infrastucture to and from the airport. : Hey Slava Ukriana- sorry to say but you sound like a Al Gore brainwashed American, always putting down any kind of physical/technological development. The way the U.S. has been going has been a non-industrial policy for 30 years which now has helped blow-up the world financial system (created to do exactly what it did- crash). Russia and hopefully all of ukraine - decide that a industrial coperation policy is needed for that area- for Ukrainian economic survival!!! Added: 17 January 2008 11:57 |
