Chevrolet beats Ford and Toyota

Chevrolet has become the most popular foreign car among Russian customers for the past 9 months. Over 131 thousand automobiles (including those produced by joint venture GM-Avtovaz) were sold in the period from January to September of 2007. The second best-seller is Ford – 120 410 cars, then goes Toyota – 110 484 cars.

The official data say that for the past 9 months the sales volume of foreign cars in Russia has grown 63% in comparison with the same period of 2006. The stability of the sales growth is explained by increase of income of potential purchasers and expanding sales in the regions besides Moscow and St Petersburg.

The booming demand for foreign cars resulted in construction of new car-making plants or remodeling old plant facilities by foreign companies. General Motors is planning 2.5 increase of capacity of its plant, which is being built under St Petersburg, up to 100 thousands automobiles per year. However, the head of GM Europe is not sure it will satisfy the Russian market.
