Russian-speaking cable TV Orsent is to be banned in Estonia as it doesn’t transmit in Estonian, tells the Estonian language authorities.
According to the language inspection the TV channel Orsent, which has been once closed in 2004 for the same violations, keeps on transmitting films, TV programs and advertising without translation into the Estonian language, what violates ‘The Language Law’. The inspection has got lots of complains for the channel work.
The inspection appealed to the Ministry of Culture to know how Orsent got 5-year license for transmission. Then it is to meet the channel authorities to decide whether to start a case of offense or to ban the channel transmission.
The cable channel Orsent started to transmit in Tallinn, the Estonian capital, in 1992. It broadcasts news, films, art, youth, family and musical programs.
Estonia with the population of 1 370 000 people has three full-scale channels, some cable channels and a public radio in both Estonian and Russian.
