A forthcoming experiment by the company Russian Railways in June will show whether low-cost trains can be in demand in Russia: it has been estimated that 20 million of Russians do not have enough money to buy even the cheapest ticket for a standard train. It is expected that tickets for low-cost trains will cost 20% less than the standard.
Representatives of Russian Railways explain the way the prices will be formed. Low-comfort conditions suppose that the trains exceed their working lifespan by at least 15 years and have no any comfort attributes, such as rags, curtains, bio toilets, etc. Besides, the tickets price may become considerably less if trains do not have an autonomic system of energy and water supply – this also means that passengers will have only one functional WC per train at their disposal. Concerning the latter the administration of Russian Railways gives an example of planes but never mentions that an air flight lasts several hours, while travelling by train may take much longer.
It is known that the main goal of launching a low-cost campaign is to cover losses but not get profit. In 2006 Russian Railways traditionally met with losses of 2.4 billion roubles.
