The St. Petersburg government and the direction of the city Metro have prepared a wide scale programme of Metro stations` modernization. Buildings over the entrance to the underground will turn into a likeness of trade centres with shops, cafes, etc.
The first Metro station in St. Petersburg to go through considerable changes is Gorkovskaya – it will close in autumn 2007. By 2009 it is planned to finish its modernization: the vestibule will become bigger and there will be constructed several new underground walkways near the station. Moreover, all moving staircases will be replaced with new ones.
The 2nd station to close for reconstruction is Narvskaya. Its modernization will start in 2008. The station urgently needs renovation as it hasn’t been reconstructed for more than 50 years.
