According to a decree by the president of Russian Railways, since the 1st of June 2007 an additional service “gender compartment” will appear in all long-distance passenger trains in Russia. Thus, while buying a train ticket passengers will have an option of choosing a male, female, or mixed-gender compartment.
      By the present moment 2.8 thousand passengers have used the new service, which was introduced on some train routes in February 2007. Interestingly, the gender-type compartments are more popular with men rather than with women: 30% of male passengers prefer to travel in a pure male company, while amongst women this percentage doesn’t exceed 17%.
