Scientists Turn Ordinary Diamond Red

Scientists from Novosibirsk discovered how to turn natural colorless diamonds into red ones without painting them – all color changes take place in atomic structure.

The technology consists of several steps: first one is to examine diamond structure in order to understand whether stones could bear high overloads.

Second step is putting diamond in high-pressure chamber, where temperature exceeds 2000 degrees Centigrade, and the third step is radiation treatment. A diamond is placed in special reactor and attached to electron accelerator, where the stone is exposed to 3 million volts.

Electrons make diamond change its color.
