Russian scientists have restarted well drilling over the biggest ice-glazed reservoir on our planet - relict lake Vostok in Antarctica, said the director assistant of the Institute for Arctic and Antarctic Research Sergey Baljasnikov.
“Works on well re-entry on the Vostok station, performed within the 52 Russian Antarctic expedition are over. We have restarted well drilling and got a first ice core in this season – from depth of 3650,43 meters”, the expert said.
Lake Vostok, which is hidden under four-kilometers-thick ice, is a unique ecosystem that had been isolated from Earth’s atmosphere and terrestrial biosphere for millions of years. Total absence of light, high pressure (reaching 400 atmospheres), specific gas and chemical water composition, and long lake isolation suggest a possibility of originating and development of local life forms, which differ essentially from life forms, that are known to modern science.
