The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) started considering the question of deletion of the first level domain names. Particularly, domain names created for non-existent countries will be eliminated. The domain .su (USSR), which was presented to the former Soviet Union in 1990, is expected to be the first on the list. It is accompanied by the domain .gb (Great Britain), since .uk is considerably much popular among users willing to register their site on the Internet.
The corporation will be studying opinions of market participants up to December 31 and then pronounce the final judgment. Chances that .su can be abolished are high, say experts, the more especially as ICANN has already deleted three domains: Czecho-Slovak .cs, East German .dd and .zr (former Zaire – Congo presently).
