11.10.2004 00:00

Unique preparation for restoration of Transfiguration church has been carried out in reserve museum Kizhi.

Probationary lifting of the upper level of the famous Transfiguration church was performed on the 4th of October on Kizhi island. The unique operation was prepared and carried out in the frames of the project of restoration of the Transfiguration church, approved by UNESCO working committee.

Wooden monuments of this age have not been restored before. The unique project of restoration of the only multiple-domed wooden church in the world has been developed by St.-Petersburg research institute Specprojectrestoration under the guidance of Vladimir Rachmanov, the chief architect of the project.

The project is based on the so-called “Norway lifting” method, providing restoration or replacement of worn-out balks without total dismounting of the monument.
