The 18th summit EU-Russia, held in Helsinki on Friday, November 24, turned to be the most dramatic in the history of Russia-EU relationship. The new partnership agreement wasn’t signed due to the meat row with Poland, which refused to withdraw its veto put on the EU-Russia negotiations. The day prior to the summit the Minister of foreign affairs of Poland reported that Poland intended to persist with its veto even at the cost of staining the Polish reputation.
The most painful question for Europe – energy strategy – wasn’t completely settled either. The position of Russia concerning energy supplies to Europe remains rather vague which draws perspectives of slow progress in the EU-Russia dialogue next year.
Another thing to throw a shadow on the EU-Russia summit was the news from London saying that the British police found radioactive polonium-210 elements in the places where Litvinenko had met with a certain number of suspects.
