Russia is planning to ban meat import from Europe January 2007. The European Commission spokesman deems the potential ban unreasonable. The Federal Agency for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision of Russia explains their decision in the following way: since Romania and Bulgaria joined the EU meat produced there is likely to shift across the European Union and consequently can get to Russia, while Russian veterinary and phytosanitary supervisors consider the epizootic situation in these two countries adverse. The press-service of the Federal Agency for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision also mentioned that the EU hadn’t timely notified the RF about Bulgaria and Romania’s joining the European Union, therefore, Russia didn’t have enough time to hold a proper inspection of veterinary services of the two new EU member-countries.
