The Kaluga Region building Volkswagen plant

The head of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Russian Federation German Gref conjointly with the Governer of the Kaluga Region Anatoliy Artamonov and executives of Volkswagen concern launched the building process of the German automaker first plant in Russia.
      On Saturday the foundation stone ceremony took place in the Kaluga Region. Speaking at the ceremony the head of the MEDT of Russia reported that by 2010 the cost of Volkswagen cars would be at least 20% less at the Russian market.
      According to his words, at the first stage (while component objects are being imported) price might fall 10% owing to customs facilities. The second stage will see up to 20% fall in prices as soon as industrial localization level amounts to 30%, by this time fabrication, paint coating and assembly work of a body will be completed at the Russian plant.
      According to plans of Volkswagen concern executive group, first cars Skoda Octavia are to leave the assembly line next fall, and starting 2009 a new Volkswagen model adapted to Russian average operating conditions is to be produced. By 2009 the plant is planned to get its total capacity of 115 thousand cars a year.
